Geek thread - Discuss IT stuff

Nah it works just fine as a music player. Plus the idea is giving it a second life - at least for a while.

The flash card ? I meant the external storage. The 80gb IDE HDD costs around 10 bucks on avito (sort of our local eBay). Of course it’s not new but come on…

You can get a brand new 320GB for about £15 here. The one in the link is only a SATA 2, but given the age of your device, it’s probably running SATA 2.

Dell finally got around to releasing the i9 XPS 17. The price makes me want to cry. I’m definitely waiting for discounts and then adding my student discount to it. I might get in touch with them and see what the price would be for a model with less RAM and storage.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY :balloon::gift::birthday::tada::confetti_ball: @framos1792 :bat: :mouse: let them celebrate you :tada::tada::confetti_ball::crazy_face:

i love geek IT people, they always focus on 1 thing until they become a real pro and no one beats them haha no facts tho, i love IT people

So W10 just gave me a heart attack…again. It was about time really. I was just browsing the web when for some reason my right arrow key just jammed itself on without me even touching it. Decided to restart and when I get back in past the lock screen I’m greeted by what looks like the initial OS setup screen as if I had just somehow reset windows. It’s odd that it came after the lock screen and not the POST screen, but after I skipped all the crap it seemed to log me in just fine. More to the point, I have my fingerprint scanner back in its full capacity and I can add multiple prints again.

EDIT:

Never mind, I spoke too soon about the fingerprint reader, the wizard seems to crash every time I enter my PIN.

Shit man, win10 gets your brain cracked. The funny thing is that a cracked W10 copy on my Mac (I don’t want to pay for a second system I’ve installed for a few apps) works just fine even after updates

A W10 on another computer has some issues though as it can’t connect to WiFi via the adapter (I’ve reinstalled the driver a couple of times but it just doesn’t work)

I actually took a chance with my W10 Pro key. Bought it off Amazon for about £5 (super sketchy), turned out to be a legit key. :joy:

On another note.

Before cleaning off most of the crap I had installed for uni:

After cleaning it off:

Visual Studio alone was a whopping ~106GB, that’s not counting all the side spam it installed without me realising.

My iCloud is filled with uni stuff lol. Can’t delete though - those are textbooks, tests, answers, etc

No, you don’t understand, the MP510 is my software drive, the only things on there are the OS and all my programs. All my files are on the LE200, those aren’t going anywhere. The 116GB I cleared was just some of the software I have for/from uni. I kept some of it though.

Not gonna lie, I’m kinda laughing at the fact apple users are all excited about widgets
Yes I use apple, yes I typically defend/support buying certain products but I think even for me it’s hella funny to see it be like a “wow” thing to where people are spending hours customizing their home screen with them when they’ve been around for so damn long everywhere else  fml…

As an aside-no I haven’t updated because usually doing it early comes with problems so I’m here awaiting these revolutionary widgets

Ouhhhh piggybacking offa that, I’ll fight anyone to defend the AirPods Pro :star_struck:
They’re absolutely brilliant
Not the biggest fan of gummy tips but even those are comfortable unlike others I’ve used

For me, it’s the noise cancellation that takes the top off of these
Legit can use my huge blower or stump grinders or heavy machinery and I can’t hear it while I can hear what I want to hear
For me, personally, they’re insanely good to use, much better bass so yeah
I’d say only some Bose buds I’ve seen come close or are comparable and they’re at the same price point if not slightly more

You lot are a bunch of cavemen with serious delusions of grandeur :joy:. I can’t wait to read in 10 years about how you finally got proper EQs and can download 3rd party software without rooting (though that will actually never happen). My LG Cookie from 2008 had wigets. LMAO

Bring it on.

£250 for some buds and they don’t even give any specs. I’ve long suspected that they just took their standard £30 buds and just sprinkled them with extra marketing.

ANC is still a gimmick to me, especially on that scale. Why do you think they moved to rubber buds? If their ANC was so good, they wouldn’t need to rely so heavily on passive NC. If you’re that deadset on spending an obscene amount of money on buds, get some Sennheiser CX400BTs for £170 (no ANC, but again, I doubt it makes that significant a difference). Or get a pair of CX150BTs for £60. The 150s have a neck wire like my Momentum Free SEs, but it doesn’t get in the way and you don’t notice it.

Or better still, get a pair of actual IEMs like the Etymotic ER3XRs for about £150. Those are a serious piece of kit that will take on full size studio headphones. They also have triple-cone buds for extreme sound isolation and a modular cable that can be replaced if it breaks and are even a tad bass boosted.

https://www.etymotic.com/consumer/earphones/new-er3se-xr-earphones-er3xr.html

Mind you, no matter what headphones you use, they’ll always sound like utter shite on any iphone because you don’t have real EQs, you have to use the dreadful pre-sets.

That’s about the timeline I was thinking of
Sad tbh

Meet in nyc

:triumph:

Nah, try them when you get a chance and you’ll see
I won’t say it’s perfect but I legit can’t tell an equipment engine is running right Next to me yet I can hear someone say something to me

Idk bout the specs either so I can only talk about my user experience
I’ve used them for a good week and a half and I legit trip out when I turn off the anc and hear a shit ton of noise lol

The rubbers def help it but if the buds are off the gummies can’t do the job

Not doubting the ones you listed off won’t be good or not but the sennheiser brand ones I’ve been lucky enough to see around here didn’t seem all that good and the ones I’ve seen reviews on that are buds only are like $300 for something comparable in reviews
I most def won’t go back to anything wired even behind the neck as I’m particularly picky about that bit-one way or another I’ll eff them up
