Geek thread - Discuss IT stuff

nope, only 1 single Chrome, but i opened like 10 tabs in it? does that count?
but i also have spotify running, a single file of excel file, a window explorer, and thats it…
i think i bought a very low quality of a laptop :joy:

It’s most likely that yeah having the tabs open if they’re running certain stuff they’re taxing it if it’s in the lower end

This.

Chrome is a RAM muncher. Depending on your specs that could be pretty bad. If you’re out of RAM, Windows will use disk space as emergency RAM, which is MUCH slower.

I need more details.

  • How old is the laptop?
  • What are the exact specs?
  • Where is it being slow specifically? If it’s only in Chrome, it might just be your WiFi speed.
  • Is there anything weird going on in Task Manager (anything using more CPU or RAM than it’s supposed to)?
  • How full is your boot drive?
  • What temps are you getting?
  • When’s the last time you cleaned the dust out of it?

If you don’t have a temp monitor, download RealTempGT (free and light, so won’t get in the way). Open RealTempGT from the .zip (there’s multiple programs in there) and run it at the below settings. You can set the colour of the text in the task bar by clicking the ‘GPU’ and ‘Max’ buttons above their respective tick box.

Download and run CCleaner (again free and pretty small). Do a custom clean at the below settings and then do a registry scan as well with all boxes ticked. Keep an eye out during the installation process, it’s going to try and install some other software. I don’t remember what it is or when it comes up, but it’s a tick box on the insallation wizard.

Finally, run ADWCleaner for good measure. Again, free, very small and works very quickly in my experience. If it detects anything, let it restart, when it restart, ADWCleaner will open again. When it does, go to the quarantine section and purge everything it found.

I’m missing it. What kind of widgets ? @the_termin8r

I have no clue what kind of widgets are on offer from Apple, but Android have a long list of things, like speed dial, weather, calendar and various app-specific ones.

Same
Battery levels, calendars, weather, tool shortcuts
Widgets are widgets on any platform
I find them pointless

Nah, of course I know what a widget is, I mean… really ? Apple teases widgets ? Those were quite popular on win7 you know.

I only have speed dial for my immediate family, a calendar and weather. The weather is just there to fill the empty gap on the page that the calendar leaves. lol

There’s nothing to add to phones
Same reason they’re tryna flip the curve and say flip phones are “in”

There hasn’t been anything new to add to phones for the best part of 5 years now. They just have stupid amounts of RAM and internal storage. Who the hell uses 16GB RAM in a phone? Do you render 8K 120FPS footage on a phone or something?

Also, those who buy a phone with the largest amount of internal storage are tools. Buy the least amount of storage and then just buy a massive µSD, that way when it all goes wrong, you can still get your data. Imagine loosing 512GB or 1024GB of data because you were thick enough to trust your internal storage, or the other components in the phone that can go wrong and stop you from accessing the storage.

Lol… I actually do kinda regret getting the mid tier one when I ended up getting cloud storage :expressionless:

I was talking about people in my last post. Apple users are cavemen, you guys are yet to evolve to modern humans. :joy:

Neanderthal  there’s a distinction  lol

Curious, did you get @chigokurosaki to return his new iPhone? :face_with_monocle:

I didn’t even know he got one.

Ahh…that’s good then :joy:
A little part of me envisioned you bullying him into taking it back :joy:

Stupidity deserves to be punished, owning an Apple is punishment enough. You pay a stupid amount of money for an inferior product, that sounds like punishment to me. :joy:

It’s weird that I consider it a genuine betrayal when a friend or family member asks me for tech recommendations, I give them a huge list of devices that would fit them, with pros, cons, prices and other info. I go into objective details as to why they should stay away from Apple, they thank me…AND THEN PROCEED TO GO AND BUY A FUCKING APPLE! :rage:

EDIT:

I had a lecturer this year who also happens to be the admissions tutor for our course, so he does part of the intro session for all the 1st years. The first thing he did was asked everyone who had an Apple product (any product) to put their hand up, he then proceeded to rip into them for the next 2 mins and call them idiots for buying Apple…especially as prospective electronic engineers. :joy:

Not the products I hope ? :joy:

Well, I’ve tried multiple types of tablets and IPads seem to be the best choice… well, for me

He ripped into Apple and all the students who had something made by Apple. LOL

Tablets are a joke, they’re not small like phones, so are inconvenient to carry and are not powerful like laptops so are useless for real work.

Try bringing a laptop to a class where there are three not-that-small guys sitting at the same table with microscopes and the glass box. I can tell you, you wouldn’t make it with a lap (we needed something to watch the presentations with. Oh and we had giant books in histology so the tablet was a variant for that too ). Or try working on a lap in a hospital where there’s not enough place to sit

There’s one thing that is hilarious about my uni. The building is GIANT, it’s nearly 15 thousand square meters if you believe google. And guess what — there just isn’t enough place to comfortably suit 30 guys… damn. I mean , of course there’s enough place to sit but damn… there’s almost no windows, and absolutely no conditioners. And if there’s more that one group at the coridor the coridor collapses. At clinic bases we can’t even afford a separative dressing room for girls and guys (at one of the clinic bases we used to dress in the toilet as girls simply wouldn’t let us in … plus it’s pretty impolite you know. There are some sort of book cases and boxes stored in the dressing rooms so girls use them as a dressing-room separator)
