Geek thread - Discuss IT stuff

You really bring the challenge to it’s edges- but I know if you decided to do this it’s absolutely clear you do it this way :joy:- I wish you a good going and maybe you can add Fanta and chicken to your challenge… keep us updated… and probably you get in terminator mood - and take care you don’t produce errors due to a lack of concentration etcetcetc … GOOD LUCK :+1:t2::four_leaf_clover:

Still? I didn’t think it was that bad.

It’s not a challenge, I’m running out of time. And if something goes wrong again, it gives me just that little bit extra to try and fix it.

Nah well i hadn’t had to ever mess with the backup locations
I deleted it because there was over 100gigs being used up by it on my sdd

Re downloaded and realized it’s the backup from when I’ve tried to sync
Just changing the location to my hdd right now but takes a while to transfer stuff over

You’ll make it - I’m sure about this- as I’ve already said: if someone can make it- it’s definitely you!!!

Aww! That are the right words!

So I just repeat them:

If someone can fight through this shit, then it is you, Rob!!

Aa, and get some sleep soon

I’ve got two fairly large programs to re-install and then it’s just games and Spotify. I’m currently copying my files over onto the other drive while watching YouTube and trying not to nod off. I’m currently at about 28h in on 6h of sleep, I’ve been at this for 18h on end (in one sitting/stint). :joy:

Ok. Fingers crossed for the end game!!

32.5 hours straight of work (in one sitting/stint) and it’s over, everything is how it should be. I also beat my personal record of 42h, my new record is 43h.

I’ll post more on what’s next, later. For now I want to sleep.

:joy::zipper_mouth_face: success finally wiith my itunes thing lol
did my first symbolic link to get around the save location

ill give you that rob-apple deserves some bashing for not allowing people to choose backup locations when phones now sometimes have more space than some peoples’ computers :expressionless: they couldn’t just add a setting within itunes that let you choose…noooo too easy… installing all of itunes to your bigger drive dont work either-of course the backup creates files within your main system drive :expressionless: cant move the files or redirect them because all hell breaks loose with their file management

so yeah… took a couple hours for the first time :upside_down_face: goes to show-if that bs that you went through happened to me-id be legit effed

You’d think they’d have fixed that by now. This again goes in conjunction with their entire ethos. They don’t want users doing what you’re doing. They want you to fill up your space and then just buy more from them, despite your laptop not being a Mac.

Right, I’m back. As I said before, the battle is over. I don’t want to say ‘won’ because it’s more of a stalemate, but it’s done…for now.

My next course of action is to backup the boot drive. Something that dawned on my yesterday in my sleep-deprived state was that instead of using Window’s broken backup utility that just gives me errors, or using some 3rd party backup program. I can just clone the entire boot drive to an old HDD I have lying around. That way if something happens, I can just clone the clone back onto the proper SSD.

After that I’ll stick my upgraded RAM back in and will run some tests and see what happnes. But since running back on the peasant RAM, I haven’t had a single random BSOD, so I think my RAM may well have gone bad. Though this current build of W10 seems to be stable for now, they might have fixed their screw-up. Lazarus is running the previous build and has crashed several times since moving to that build.

After all that is done, I’ll post exactly what I’ve has to deal with over the past 8 or so days. And then I’ll make the mega posts that outlines all the W10 problems I’ve had since it came out.

Yeah  sighhh
Aaaaand I came to the conclusion that this crap about my phone freezing up is the latest update, it’s got some bug or idk but it’s driving me up the effing wall

Can you roll back the phone update?

Ahemmmm LOL…not allowed after a certain period of time
I was like 4 updates back when it was functioning properly…I don’t update until time has passed for fear of this stuff happening,
They’re rolling out iPhone 11 and it’s coming with iOS 13 so there’s the next update-hopefully works smoother

I’m well familiar with that one. W10 is the same.

Boot drive cloning is going well. Technically I’m not even cloning it, I’m imaging it. It took 4.5h to image it, so I’m not fully done and will hopefully finish it up at some point tomorrow. With the image I have a ‘snapshot’ of the SSD in its current state. That image can then be duplicated onto as many drives as I want. My plan is to keep the image on one external drive and then re-image a second external drive. That way I have a copy of the boot drive as well as its image externally.

I still need to run the RAM tests, so I’ll do that tomorrow as well.

In other news, the second HDMI to USB adapter came and this one works since it’s a proper one. It also comes with the added benefit of having audio in and out jacks. That means that I’m now running all four screens. I’ll be making a detailed post on my thread at some point in the next week, before uni starts properly.

Here’s a quick taster of what my cleaned up desk setup looks like. In the first pic, it looks like the left screen has horrific backlight bleed, it doesn’t, it’s due to the angle of the screen relative to the camera.

Since I had time to kill while the SSD was being imaged, I decided to further clean up my desk setup by bodging a basic phone mount to my headphone stand. It was made using a lot of gorilla tape, some strip metal, a short length of PVC pipe and a broken 3D printed servo mount for an RC car. :joy:

It also has a cable going to the dock’s USB powershare port, so I have faster-than-regular-USB charing (but slightly slower than the stock wall charger) and a direct data connection to my laptop. I think the pay off is worth it. I’m connected to my laptop and I keep my battery alive for longer as I’m not abusing it with a higher charge current.

Just finished with the boot drive imaging. RAM tests are next, probably in the next couple of days when I have time.
