Geek thread - Discuss IT stuff

I just can’t really get it.
I mean it’s fun and all to think that something bigger is harassing you.
And sure, the bigger something has my full understanding. I’m in his shoes, my fun would also lay in torturing you.
Jk
But it’s technic. There must be a reason that this happens over and over again.

Sit-rep:

I don’t know why anyone thought this was a good idea, but fiddling with the privacy settings in W10 disables your update settings. And the only way to get them back is to do a full reset of the PC, because putting the privacy settings back the way you found them does jackshit. :man_facepalming:

Lol wow
That’s why you couldn’t fiddle with the updates?
That’s bs

Yeah, and the bad thing is, I did all the privacy stuff all at once, so I don’t know which setting triggered it or if it was more than one. My only way to weed it out now is to do them one by one, check after every change, trigger it, reset the OS, then continue down the list to make sure there aren’t multiple triggers. Reset for every trigger if there are multiple, then when I finally get through all of it, leave the triggers untouched.

It’s fucking retarded.

Just from that I’ll guess that practically everything triggers it :grimacing:

Well, I triggered it again, but now I have my doubts. I don’t know if it was a delayed response from the other priv settings or the one I last touched. Or if it didn’t just change on its own. I’m currently resetting the entrie laptop again. I’ll just open to the update page and I’ll stare at it for 5 mins (without having touched anything) just to see what happens.

Don’t stare at it lmao you’ll trigger something :joy::joy::joy:

If it moves on its own, I might as well cut my losses and just move on. I’ll have W10P with all the feature of W10H. Crank the supposed privacy settings to 11 and be done with it. I can’t do a factory reset every 5 mins.

Aye why didn’t you do that sooner?
Earlier when I mentioned a clean copy I didn’t ask that because I imagined it’d cost a bit to upgrade it but maybe that’s a solution :upside_down_face: it’d be a clean slate wouldn’t it?

No, I mean I already run W10P, but with the update controls bricked, it’s pretty much just W10H.

Aaaaahh
Gotcha
Everything else looking ok?

It was, and more to the point, I think I might have had a hardware issue. Since sticking the peasant RAM in, I haven’t had a single BSOD. W10 is still fully responsible for bricking and corrupting itself though, but the crashes might be RAM related.

Ok, this shit is getting stupider by the minute. I triggered it agian, but this time with a different setting. I went to edit the registry (something that should work, but didn’t in the past), and it worked. I suppose a work-around is to set my privacy as I please and just edit the registry when it gets bricked. Not ideal, but better than nothing. If that method stops working, then fuck it, I’ll deal with the updates as they come.

I’ve never been more wary of a damn update in my life lol

Trouble with Microsoft store then it went to restart then went straight to it :grimacing:

That’s pretty much how they always happen to me.

I’ve made progress on my end. I’ve re-encrypted both of my drives and reinstalled 42 of 75 programs. I still have 33 programs, 32 games, all of my files to transfer to my file drive and my Spotify library to re-download. I’m about an hour away from hitting the 24h mark and I’m completely spent. I’m only running on about 6h of sleep since last I slept.

That’s crazy dude, I didn’t expect you here

Thought you had called it quits at some point :grimacing:
We’ll see how mine goes
Stuck at 27% haha
Anyway I wouldn’t have the time to do everything you’ve done :skull:

I wasn’t messing about when I said I was going to hunker down and do it in one sitting. lol

Getting stuck at any percentage always concerns me.

I’m running out of time as well, I go back to uni on Mon. Granted, it’s an intro week, but still…

Aye… I’ve seen some stuff online where they say it’s normsk for it to lag at some point but yeeeeeah, the longer this goes the more tense I get :joy: I’ve seen into the future thanks to you haha

Yeah, still best it happened now than midway through when you’re right before a project or something
Do you have any warranty on yours btw?

The laptop’s warranty expired a few months ago, and I don’t think it covers upgraded parts. The RAM is still less than a year old, and if Corsair’s site is anything to go by, it has a lifetime warranty. I still haven’t had any BSODs which points more and more to the RAM in terms of system instability. BUT, the other laptop has crashed multiple times since the last update.

So went through about 45 mins ago, no issues as of yet :no_mouth:
Everything seems to be working ok aside from me still working on iTunes issue but totally separate thing…
