I don’t follow GOT either. I just know that it looks like LOTR but has a load of terrible sex scenes in it and Sean Bean does not die on screen (or does he @Jabin_Quaken ? )

Yeap, GOT is just porn and deaths. Dunno why so many people love it.
Fantasy is my worst genre to be honest. I always find stuff far stretched 
The lore in fantasy is too wide and in order to understand you need to know 80% of it.

Also, Martin kills oh-so-many main characters. But the story’s not about sex and kills. The main thing is playing with the fate of a particular world and it’s pretty different from the LOTR. Someone said, it’s closer to the The “Accursed Kings” by Maurice Druon (which is not fantasy but historical), which I intend to read much later, because now I read Terry Brooks.
Because of the rush and unexpected turns of the plot. Porn and kills are interesting for the early teenagers, maybe. The others like the story. I prefer reading it, though. The TV show is rather worse.

Lord of the Rings? No idea about it either. Haven’t watched it.
Dunno, a few friends of mine started it recently and they say it’s crap and nothing interesting. They gave up on it. My mum used to watch the TV series and she actually liked it but stopped cause we switched providers and the ones we have now don’t stream it.
Sean Bean - the actor who dies almost in every movie or series he’s been invited to, including LOTR and GOT. I consider, he’s a good actor, though (and he’s good at dying thing).
George R.R. Martin - the original author of the Song of Ice and Fire.
Tell ya, it’s supposed to be read. It depends on your literature preferences, though. If you like more detectives or some love stories, you won’t like the epic saga about the knights, chivalry and betrayals, showing all the cruel and dirty sides of the people.

Well, I’m not sure you should. I prefer the book. There’s a bit more violence in it but it’s not that bright and explicit, and you at least understand why is this bloody mix happening.
