I got a really nice ‘I told you so’ moment a few mins ago. The A1489 ipad mini that my family owns is partially dead. The crappy home button clicker mechanism broke so the home button doesn’t work. This happend after about 4 years of use. I warned them about exactly this 4 years ago and told them it was a known issue, even back then. As usual they didn’t listen to me, now I get to be smug…again . It’s still useable, but you have to do a lot of touch gestures.
The fix involves hot-air-gunning the face off, replacing the button, cleaning the old adhesive off, putting new adhesive on and sticking the face back on. I could probably fix it myself, but fuck if I’m going to waste my life on that shit. I’ve told them multiple times before, if they buy Apple, they better not come crying to me for help when it goes wrong, they dug their own grave.
New toy. Finally got myself a physical EQ. It’s a 2 channel, 15 band, Behringer Ultragraph Pro FBQ1502HD. Not a brand I’ve ever heard of, but a friend who’s more into audio stuff says they tend to clone better designs from other companies, but they’re generally ok for the price. Currently have one EQ channel per speaker on my CD player channel, but I realised I could have one channel for the CD player in stereo and one channel for my laptop in stereo. That way I don’t have to rely on my horrific audio drivers when I have the laptop docked, so I’m currently waiting for the new cables to come in. I can finally enjoy my CDs properly, my entire system and speakers have a fairly flat response, so everything sounded flat.
That’s awesome! If I may ask, was it expensive?
It was about £100 from amazon, but I had to buy cables for it so it came to about £120. Not too bad as far as audio equipment goes. Since real audio equipment is actually unkillable I was looking for second hand ones from better brands, but couldn’t really find anything.
The EQ alone seems to have gone up £20 since I bought it the other day.
My entire system is built around price to performance, it’s not the best, but it’s better than your average person will ever need and doesn’t cost that much (as audio equipment goes).
-
Amplifier: Cambridge Audio Topaz AM10
Costs about £200, but got it for ~£125, currently on discount for £50 on their site, but is out of stock. -
CD player: Cambridge Audio Topaz CD10
Got it for the same sort of price as the amp. -
EQ: Behringer Ultragraph Pro FBQ1502HD
Obviously don’t need to say anything here. lol -
Speakers: Mordaunt Short MS914
Apparently when these were new they were in the £400 range. My dad found a pair on Ebay, in excelent conditon (the guy had bought them and then just left them in the back of his living room or something) for about £80. -
Headphones: Sennheiser HD598
At the time they were £200, but I got them for about £125 on discount. The 598s have been EOL for a while, but you can get 599s (practically the same) in the £150 range last I checked.
Including about £35 in cables, I paid about £590 - £600, at full price it would have been £1150 to £1200. At full price it can hold up to some systems that are significantly more expensive. At half price the value for money skyrockets.
I’m really happy with it, the good thing with real audio equipment is that it doesn’t become out of date in a year and doesn’t often go wrong (or if it does, it can be repaired). It’s the sort of stuff you can legitimately pass down to your kids in a lot of cases.
Not bad at all. I’d expected more since most studio-like equipment can be pretty expensive.
True, except for my Sennheiser in-ear headphones that crashed couple days ago
I said real audio equipment. lol
This never happened, turns out each channel is mono. So instead I bought a cheap passive switch to go between my CD player and laptop. Before I had then on separate channels on the amplifier, but I wanted to pass my laptop output through the EQ, that way I’m no longer at the mercy of my audio drivers (for the thunderbolt output at least).
My check come 2 days early yay
One 4h exam down, 5 to go . Thank god it was an online one. Had it been a proper in-person one, I would have failed on such an apocalyptic scale that it wouldn’t have even been funny.
Lol. Had to consult your notes/google on a few?
They were open book, I used my notes for almost all of them, I wrote 12 pages, the longest exam I’ve written.
Finally done with my wretched exams. Now I just have my dissertation to finish.
Congrats
Congratulations and good luck with that last step!
Yaaay grats again
