A new way of asking questions during a band Video Chat

The Linkin Park Underground chat with Phoenix just finished and though it was a rather good session, I was wondering if there could be a better way of asking questions. I was thinking something like a voting system on questions and the highest voted questions get asked, cause it’s a real shame to see good, intelligent questions get ignored due to people asking questions like “Do you know about the Trollface?”

A few good questions I saw unanswered (aside from the general “Hows the latest album doing, who’s your favourite bassist”, ect ect) were:

Is there any chance of another collaboration with another artist this year?

What feeds your creativity?

How did you and the band feel when record labels turned you down before you got signed?

Just kinda stuff like that, I can’t remember them all but there were some very good ones. I understand people still wanna ask fun questions like “What’s your favourite soccer team” which is cool but I think there should be some voting system in the forums where good questions are seen if enough people like them they should get priority in future video chats, like a moderator asking them on behalf of us.

But it’s just an idea, what do you think? :]

-EDIT-
I just wanted to make it clear that I really do appreciate the band and site moderators even making this possible, I don’t in any way want to seem ungrateful, last night was a great experience. :]

I think this idea would be great!

But I have another more simple idea. They should just put a limit of like 10 posts per user on every chat so that people don’t flood or waste their opportunities

Or, just a lapse of time required between each post.

I think that the major problem is just like you said about there being too many spam questions. It used to be alphabetical before we went to tinychat and that seemed to work a lot better than what the current system is were it is mostly spam of “when are you coming to…” or ridiculous questions like “do you like bacon”. I love the voting forum idea but there has to be limits on that because that can be abused also to those kind of questions. I believe that we were better just going down the like in letters. we need to find some level ground or if worst comes to worst we just have more admins in the chatroom banning people.

Agree
please change the lpu chat method

Yeah good idea + moderated chat. Funny that people pay serious money just to ask “do you like bacon” wtf? I assume some dumb kids under 13 or so…thats the majority here i think. Oh well, hope that they will think about some good ideas before another chat. And yeah, too bad that those really good questions are turned down just for “do you like cats” c’mooon

I completely agree. people flood the chat with dumb questions.
do you like cats, do you like bacon, does Mike like bacon,.,

We know the system is far from perfect. We are trying the best we can with the tool that TC has given us. Sadly, TC’s version of “moderated chat” is just either all or nothing. In other words, either all chat messages go through without any type of filter or no messages go through at all.

This is also the reason why we can’t enforce a letter system like we had before. I will try to talk to adam to see if he has any input on how we could make this go more smoothly

it used to be that the moderators would call a letter and if your screen name starts with that letter only those members were able to send a question. Then it gave the band a chance to scan the questions and not be flooded by everyone’s question at once. Not sure why they don’t do that anymore. I was lucky Phi answered my question tho not a very intelligent one - I just wanted to know more about Rob, the man is so quiet!

Well normally, its pretty controlled. The Moderators like Dragon do quite well in keeping everything normal. It would make sense to have messages and comments go through some sort of filter but that can be done if its nessecary. Shame the letter system cant be put up again, cause it was very effective on previous LPU chats.

I think this a good idea, too. I, too, saw some very good questions fly by because people were all focused on one, silly, topic. (Not to mention that I thought I had good, more personalized questions, since a lot were about LP in general and the other members). I like the idea of only members with a certain letter starting their name.

I think a combination the poll for getting base questions that would be asked of the band member, and then adding the “letter calling out” for direct questions from us.

Hey guys. Thanks for participating in the chats and for your feedback.

Unfortunately, we’re pretty limited by what we can do. A voting system or limiting the number of things people can type sound easy, but those are totally custom builds that tinychat would have to do, and it’s not that simple. The old system of alphabetical worked well because we could “moderate” the chat (meaning we could push through only certain messages to the band and to everyone else in the chat.) This particular chat platform doesn’t do that.

There really isn’t a “perfect” video chat solution. We’ve tried a TON of them, and this really is the best we’ve found believe it or not. To get the “perfect” solution, we’d have to custom build a chat which would probably cost $30,000, if not more.

We’re always working to improve the chat though, so hopefully we can find a new solution. I know this is something very important to you guys.

yeah…I can’t even read any, I could see how phi get confused reading so many chat.
I also think the same way as @antoine
but yeah…it must be cost more… :frowning:

Yeah, I had a hell of a time trying to read some of those questions…

To tell you the truth, my favorite chat experience was when the moderators opened the chat so that everyone could try to post their question and then stop the chat (change it to mod-mode) so that the band member could scan through the questions and pick a few here and there that they would like to answer. Then the mod would open the chat again to let a few more questions come through. I have been in the LPU since 2.0, and this is my favorite FOR SURE because, to tell you the truth, the moderators don’t always pick the best questions to send through to the band member. There have been plenty of times where the mods would send questions to the band member that have been answered millions of times before and where the information is readily available on Google. The point of LPU chats, imo, is to get in depth answers about their process as a band in the studio and on the road, themselves as people, and the typical daily lives of our idols to bridge the gap between our realities and their rockstardom. Now…I think it was Dan (dragonlp) that said that you guys can no longer stop the chat/change to moderator mode because I guess tinychat got rid of that option, but I’m just throwing it out there that as a long-time LPUer, it was FOR SURE the most successful of any band chat that I’ve been in.

Is this your first year to the LPU? Guess so…

In the previous years the chats were moderated and everyone got to ask a question cause we were going by alphabetical order. Then, the mods took a closer look to the questions and passed as many as possinle for the guys to answer. Best chats ever. No spamming, no crazy fangirls, no random shoutouts etc and everyone was happy.

It’s a very good idea but hard to actually find a system that will work in a chat like that

I hated those chats. Yeah the chatroom wasn’t crazy, but it felt like there was favoritism with mods picking the same people for every chat to forward their question and there were plenty of questions sent on that were dumb or have been answered millions of times "Why does Brad where headphones? Why does Dave go by “Phoenix? What does “Hybrid Theory” mean?”, etc, etc… I at least like the fact that the band members can CHOOSE which questions they want to answer. Maybe they want to strictly talk about the new album, or maybe they don’t want to think about the album and just crack some jokes in the chatroom. Whatever…but I like that the band member controls which direction the chat goes…
