I felt the same way as you, I know it’s hard to change the LPU chat but I wish it was different. However, I feel quite grateful for having the chance to participate in this kind of experience. I really do.
In the previous years the chats were moderated and everyone got to ask a question cause we were going by alphabetical order. Then, the mods took a closer look to the questions and passed as many as possinle for the guys to answer. Best chats ever. No spamming, no crazy fangirls, no random shoutouts etc and everyone was happy.
That sounds awesome!

It was. But like Adam said above it’d be really hard and expensive to do that again I’m just glad we now have video and the guys don’t need to type super fast to catch up with us. band chats are always a pleasure to be part of
Hey guys. Thanks for participating in the chats and for your feedback.
Unfortunately, we’re pretty limited by what we can do. A voting system or limiting the number of things people can type sound easy, but those are totally custom builds that tinychat would have to do, and it’s not that simple. The old system of alphabetical worked well because we could “moderate” the chat (meaning we could push through only certain messages to the band and to everyone else in the chat.) This particular chat platform doesn’t do that.
There really isn’t a “perfect” video chat solution. We’ve tried a TON of them, and this really is the best we’ve found believe it or not. To get the “perfect” solution, we’d have to custom build a chat which would probably cost $30,000, if not more.
We’re always working to improve the chat though, so hopefully we can find a new solution. I know this is something very important to you guys.
My suggestion is: LPU could raffle questions among the LPU members. Just for example: 2 weeks before the chat starts, all LPUer can sign up to win 1 of 100 questions. So as the monthly giveaway works. Through this, we would have 100 questions, that are ready to be presented to the band member. That would be rather clear und the band member could choose that questions, he likes to answer. And also through this, every LPUer had the same chance! Regardless if the LPUer ist 13 or 43 years old. And regardless if he want’s to know, what colour Mikes socks have or what artistic influence have cornflakes, when they are eaten at noon. A fair thing.
A negative point with that method is, that it is not really live, because the questions are formulated before chat starts. In my opinion, that might be ok, because nobody (except the winners) knows the questions before and the answers are live anyway.
Another suggestion is, to put a record of the chat afterwards into the videos. So any LPUer had the possibility to watch it later on.
I’m very happy that we got any responce whatsoever. Still, talking isn’t doing. Update some regulations with in example: BAN - people spamming/“come to -insert your country here- sh*t”/stupid questions etc. And actually ban all of above. Than way the chat window will be VERY clean trust me And if you ban one person at one chat, 90% chances he/she will learn the lesson and stay come at the next one.

Hard to beilve some people think a perfect video chat solution exists considering everything has its limits and espcially with the usual custom builds that most chats need.

Turning off chat sounds good but on the other hand as soon as you turn it on the spam flow begins what equals quite a long time for anyone on the other side to scroll through. I have a great idea but this will require some coding (and by what you previously said - not an option at this moment=FAIL by LPU) or maybe just some Chat options? Don’t know how it works there.
1 question per person= ~300-500 questions? Depending on the number of viewers. As soon as someone posts his question, he can’t post another one = people will finally THINK before they post = better and quite good questions, not dumb “do you like bacon” stuff. Simple? If you know how to approach yeah, if you can’t get something right for once, not a chance…
If not in this year maybe you will actually think this through before launching LPU12 huh? And please, don’t answer with prices (Adam). I really get what You mean but seriously? An international fanclub (if it was free of charge, ignore my post. But people actually pay money to enter - that makes a different story) with thousands members and you can’t get a simple chat system? Give me a break.
As for the “rules” well, You really believe that people will follow them? Not a chance! I am really looking forward to anything better than the free chat or on/off or letter option (even when we had “letter” thing sometimes people couldn’t even post cause “sorry” their username letter wasn’t even called)
IMHO what i said about 1 post per person sounds really good. In example yesterday the system was overloaded like You said - this is due to people spamming I assume. 1 post option removes that problem Another thing: if a bandmember gets a plain list with questions he could go through it smoothly and answer one by one, without going through 70% of spam “give me a shoutout”, “when will you come to -insert country here-”, “hello” stuff Consider this idea
And to be clear, this is not Your or any mod’s fault, You’re just doing Your job as good as You can - I appreciate it Whew, thats a long answer
edit: voila: ustream option: “Turn on slow mode: This makes it so that there is a one minute forced wait time after every message a user sends” Don’t know if there’s a duration change option but if yes, well, You just set it to 1 hour and You’re done
Yes, sadly, the spamming will pick up just as it left off…
I see where you are coming from, however… TinyChat has already special-coded so much for us. Some things are just not possible at this time with what TinyChat has developed. Again, anything dealing with coding has to go through TinyChat, not LPU HQ

Again, this is not possible. Even if we could, it would take way too long and cost too much for IT to create that code. Plus, the band member would have to be in the chatroom for HOURS to answer all those questions, and their schedule just does not allow for that much time.
As Adam said, they looked at a lot of different options, and this is the best option they could find. And cost has everything to do with it. Every penny of what we charge goes right back to the operational costs for the LPU (summits, merch, so on) so their budget is actually far more limited than you may think to spend on IT or things like that.
I know that a good number of people do not read the rules, however, that is the only change that is the most feasible at this moment. Eventually, after they’ve been banned enough, they will realize they need to follow the rules.
Well, sorry but again, as Adam has said, this is the best option we have found. And as for your gripe about the letter system… that is the way it worked. You could only ask if your username began with that letter called. And the “on/off” is the only form of “moderated chat” TinyChat allows.
It’s not that we do not think it is a good idea. I for one like that idea too, it’s that the limitation of posts just can not be done with this, or any system without major, expensive custom coding. The only way LPU could afford that would be to jack the price up to over $100, which we will not do if we can help it (ie: as long as the Summit prices, web hosting prices, etc stay where they are)
Thanks for at least understanding that much We are trying as hard as we can to make this work as well as we all want it to. and lol yeah, quite the novel [biggrin][ugeek]
Well there’s already a spam protection there. If they already special-coded some things for You, maybe they could add a variable that allows people to post after in example 1 hour or so? From what I know not too much coding, 2 lines of code maximum.
Who said anything about answering all questions? Never in my LPU chat history a bandmember answered all questions. What I ment was that using the actual spam protection - after editing the antispam module to one hour in example- You can almost get a list of questions only. without that spam You mostly see. People will read that they only have one chance to ask a question and I bet that they will really think before they do. And that’s more time to in example Phoenix to read THROUGH and pick some questions just like he usually does.
I know about that but still using a little basic edit to the antispam module should help alot. And it shouldn’t cost more than a cup of coffe
Sure but with current glithes You can’t ban, You can’t ban - You get spam (u feel my rhyme? haha :D)
And again, there is no need to change anything besides the current antispam option which will allow user to post one question and another one in one hour or so.
edit: damn someone has to make something with:
quotations - they’re killing me if there’s more than 1
signatures - max allowed one + adding them automatically just like they were at old LPUMB and not within the new post area (and that’s just annoying :P)

This
On topic. I’m just glad in the fact that we’re able to have chats like this in the first place regardless of what video source we use etc. Some fan clubs don’t allow opportunities like this.
In regards to spam, yes, it sucks, people need to learn rules. If anything, the rules should be at the top of the page so they get more noticed. I feel that since they’re at the bottom, they get ignored and people don’t scroll down farther than the chat itsself. Even so, it’s still nearly impossible to stop all spam. The more people that spam, the more other people are going to want to do it, and a lot of good questions tend to go unnoticed or lost in the spam of stupid.
I can’t speak for everybody, but, I didn’t pay $60 for band chats just to find out if they like tacos or to spam hoping they “COME TO MY COUNTRY.” Band chats should only be for the people who actually have questions worth asking. People shouldn’t waste time in the chat room if they’re only there to spam, that’s abusing that right.
I think on the day of scheduled chats, along with the rules, there should be topics for that chat, like the new album, MFR, the next single/music video etc (it might also help with the spam)
That was my first live band chat, i accully sadly had to missed it but somone posted a link to the video. So I got to see most of what was being said, I thought it was rly cool but sum Q were kind of stupid like somone asked were he was well duh he’s in Cali. And he did say his home studio right at the beginning of the chat lol, phoenix even said himself the chat was going to fast for him to keep up with, so somone should write ground (CRL) and ask to change it back to what it was before but I can’t wait for the band chat this time I’ll be ready and with a good question

I think this idea would be great!
But I have another more simple idea. They should just put a limit of like 10 posts per user on every chat so that people don’t flood or waste their opportunities
Or, just a lapse of time required between each post.
As for the Phi chat, I think our main issue was that we mods couldn’t get in for whatever reason. There would have been 3 of us in there [me, dereklp, schen] so we could have somewhat controlled the spammers… but for whatever reason, we weren’t able to get in. Thus, spammers had a field day.
As long as we mods can get in on the chat day, we should be able to control the spam enough that people can actually get good questions in. I hope
Yes, sadly, the spamming will pick up just as it left off…

Hey there. Thanks a lot for the feedback, I know I now know more about how this site runs than before, thank you all for contributing, especially the moderators. :]
Never thought it could be so complicated. :o
