Rick Rubin has produced or helped produce every LP album ever since MTM. Was he one of the reasons LP changed their style?
I actually wondered the same thing. But I think LP wanted to differentiate themselves from other bands with similar sounds. I think Mike talks about it in one of their videos (maybe “the making of MTM”) not sure though. Don Gilmore produced HT and Meteora, so changing producers would definitely help LP achieve their goal of changing their sound enough to differentiate themselves from others while still sounding like LP. So to answer your question: Yes, Rick Rubin was ONE of the causes for Linkin Park’s change.
I think so. He is not the pincipal reason but he has a part on this change. Maybe he makes the band confortable to produce what they want.
I don’t know about any other bands internal matters or their new styles but Linkin Park is the only band which has kept their fans always on their toes ! They have transparency in their process. They have unlimited fun, they keep an eye on their fans, they make lot of crazy stuffs and at the end of the day Rick Rubin suggests what makes them special and how things should be. The making of MTM, ATS, LT shows how they are getting matured and their creativity even though there is a faint cry of HT and Meteora style back !
They wanted to see what else they were capable of as a band. Don Gilmore only really works with rock/pop bands. He doesn’t really have all that much experience with rappers. Plus, with all the elements to the Linkin Park sound, and with all the experience Rick has had with a variety of many different artists, it was a perfect fit and a great opportunity for the band to grow, and to improve their sound and what they can do as a band.
I don’t think he was the reason, I think that he gave them his support when they wanted to change.
Besides all the blah blah…
Mike himself said that Rick Rubin had done nothing of this sort. But it is true that it was him who suggested inverting the writing process. So instead of writing lyrics first and then adding music, they started writing music and then adding lyrics. But no matter how hard you sort through the data from that period, you’ll always end up with what the band said: It was our decision. Take it for what you will.
I think that Linkin Park have always been true innovators within themself when it came to their music. They already knew that they wanted to make changes to their musical direction in the future and Rick helped nuture that change that they were trying to make. One of the many things I have always found endearing about LP that you never know what to expect when you are about to preview a new album of theirs. Everything about them is original, unlike most of these fake artists of today.
It was the band’s decision to change their sound. They simply wanted to try new things and see where it goes. Rick simply understood what they wanted to do and helped them achieve it. Gilmore wouldn’t be a good fit since he only produces clear rock albums while Rubin produces everything!

It’s possible
clapsclaps Reading through these comments, you guys are who Linkin Park would love to have as their fans. Despite their change, you guys still support them. (Not like those who does not like LP anymore due to the change. Like uh, are you Linkin Park? If no, what gives you the right to say what the band should do? Get what I mean?)
Linkin Park wants to have a sound which they can actually call their own. Not that HT or Meteora isn’t theirs but they want to improve themselves and not to stick to what they are used to. This shows how they grow and better themselves. Rick Rubin is there to support them and also to shed some light on how to go about…(I think I make sense right here, I’m not too sure.) I’m proud of Linkin Park no matter what they do. Because at the end of the day, what Linkin Park does is make music out of love and passion for it.
Living Things by Linkin Park is Fantastic!!
I think it was Linkin Park’s choice to change because I remember that Rick Rubin produced for Matallica and they’re pretty heavy
He also produced Adele’s 21. But it’s not like I hate the new LP. I fucking love them. I was just wandering if Rubin had a little somethinng to do with it.
Nope, he didn’t. It was LP’s choice to “change”
Rick just supported and helped mold them into the correct change and sound LP was looking for, added a dimension to there sound, shaped it, inspired creativity, but LP wanted and made the change. If the final sound is not what LP wants, it wont come out period. LP likes to be different, hence the lost in the echo video. They do what they want and think is best even if the record label or others are against it. You can see the struggle of change in M2M to a final better balanced change in living things. LP is growing, and rick is just helping with that growth.
