Hard to draw with colored pencils on this type of paper. This lot of detail would be easier on a smaller format.

Yep. I wanted your help how to blend these colors. Graphite pencils can be done… But how should i do with colours??

It’s not that easy with these. Sorry for lots of text.

  1. Not all the pigments can lay down as they should. Blue-ish and dark ones tend to leave gaps and they are often harder.
Brown-ish dark have hard granes in them so can leave marks and scratches, which you obviously don’t want.

  2. Not all the paper types allow you to blend as you wish. If I were using standard office paper (80g/m), I’d mess up. It would be torn by pencils before I got any decent result.
So for the colored pencils I use the back of the watercolor paper, which is 200g/m and more durable.

  3. Blending works through overlay. From light to dark, to make it careful.
Most of volume can be acheaved by using only blue-red pencil. If you can do it with monochrome, you can do it with blue-red.
So you have to find out, which color you will get when you overlay different colors and different pigments. I use drafts to see which color I have and then think forward intuitively: how would it look over the color I already have. Sometimes gotta try on a draft.

  4. Softness does matter.
I use different brands and they draw different.
To blend I often use watercolor pencils, which are most soft.
Sometimes I overlay the white gel-ink pen over the ready drawing and then I add some more pencils to get the needed effect.

I know,it’s a lot of info and a lot of stuff to try. The colored pencils are the tools to work hard to master.

Ya… I’ve heard about that. I’ve got Normal sketch book ones…they don’t smudge.

Thanks a million for your teachings! I’ll try them next weekend :slightly_smiling_face: will post my doodles an learnings here as well so that you can tell about my progress. Thanks again!

They are usually 80-100 g/m. I used a sketchbook for Inktober. Ok for pen/ink/pencil. Also did those rose-tentacles art in it. Watercolor paper gives a bit more possibilities.
