Personal Projects

Ok. Thanks.
My laptop needs to be always plugged in. And I need the phone for the writing part, need the correcting proposals.

When you answer a question, do you reply in the Topic or directly? Cause I never get your answers shone as tags.

Here? Uusually. Tags usually show up when someone @s you. Sometimes I reply by posts. You should be gettng a reply notification either way though. But, I think you’ll find that your notifications are just broken, just like mine. :stuck_out_tongue:

But it is just with you.
Tags and quotes show up, yes.
But no direct replys to a question.
I thought you do it by purpose to reply to the topic in general.
And its not just in this topic that way.

How do you make your replies? The one you just posted, was it a general reply? If yes, I got a notification for it, even my desktop notification popped up.

No. I replied directly.
This, right now, I reply in general.
And again, there was no notification of your reply.

I got that one just fine.

But it’s your topic.
You get notified for every reply. Right?

I don’t think it matters. Go make a general reply in the nifty topic and let’s see what happens.

My game testing both for temperatures and battery life is ongoing. I’m currently rotating between Crysis Warhead, 2 and 3. I must say C3 surprised me, the difference in graphics between minimum and maximum settings is near negligible. The only difference that is noticeable is the frame rate, my GPU struggles to push 18 FPS while easily hitting 60 and above in min. Goes to show just how hardcore a game C3 is if it looks amazing even in minimum settings. I haven’t had to bump the settings down for any of the other games I’ve played so far, because it hasn’t been needed, though I suspect Rise Of The Tomb Raider will need a lot of bumping down.

Comparison pics (the first is always the one on minimum settings):

Yes, there’s a lens flare on the max one here, but it’s a feature that is toggleable and can be applied with min settings as well.

Sit-rep:

I’m adding Shadow Of The Tomb Raider to the testing list as well. I just picked up the Croft Edition (an £83 version), for £25 in yet another Steam sale. This one is going to be a bullet in the head for my laptop considering it makes dedicated gaming desktops sweat. I’ll be expecting 0.1 FPS in ultra settings.

Why do this now? It’s already too hot :joy:

Temp’s nice on this side, we’re sitting at like 20C today, wet, gloomy, really nice. Also for completion’s sake, I want to finish the modern TR trilogy.

Those are max graphic settings?

It was a joke. SOTTR is designed to be run on a top spec RTX 2080Ti, how do you think a mobile 1050 is going to handle it? I was running C3 on max settings on battery power yesterday, I averaged about 7 FPS. :joy:

This post is going to be a twin PRR. I went for a couple of runs the past couple of days. Neither run was great and the second ended in gearbox issues for the umpteenth time. During the first run I was noticing weird throttle behaviour during the run. It felt like I was plipping the throttle briefly at times despite me being nowhere near the trigger. As the run progressed, it occurred to me that it might be a damaged gear and it was just skipping teeth. I didn’t think it was a gear as the transmission sounded no different than usual.

During the run I noticed that braking was also greatly diminished, but that’s down to the fact that the rear tyres have worn down to nothing, they are completely smooth on their main contact patch with the ground. There’s some tread left around the edges. Now I know why racers go through a set of tyres every other race. It wasn’t as obvious when I was running slicks as there isn’t any tread on them to begin with.

There’s not much to say about the run, it was so boring that I didn’t even stick around to finish the battery.

The second run was going well until the gearbox gave out. My suspicions about the throttle spikes actually being gearbox damage turned out to be correct. I wasn’t running in the stomping ground this time, I was at Hampstead Heath, so I was having a lot of fun. The area has lots of jumps, turns and wide-open gravel areas to hoon around in. Unfortunately, the run was cut short by the gearbox. I also can’t show the telemetry for that run as some way through, the sensor wire of the motor got disconnected (I’m guessing either during a crash or due to extreme vibrations), and I don’t want to post incomplete data.

Spent today tearing the transmission apart yet again. It was the previously damaged spur that was causing problems. The spur was torn to shreds. I ordered a new one today, in the meantime, I’m running the old, stock, 87T spur.

In terms of gifs, neither run had anything interesting to post. The second was very fun while it lasted, but it doesn’t show on camera.

Here’s the telemetry from the first run and the spur gear damage.

The spur gear came in the other day and I installed it yesterday, nothing much to report there. I did however find a substantial ‘crack’ in the front bumper. I think it might be from a head on crash I had with a tree root I didn’t see in the last run. That bumper has not had an easy life at all, and I’m surprised it lasted this long. It is still usable, so I’ll replace it when it breaks completely.

I wanted to try something new, so I shot a time-lapse video of the replacement. This is actually my second attempt. The first was when I tore down the transmission in the last post, but I didn’t have the best angle and I forgot to move my light out of the frame, so it was covering most of what I was doing. This one’s a lot better, but has much room for improvement. Unfortunately, the only way I could position the phone meant I had to film in portrait.

I also realised that I forgot to post photos of the tyre wear in the last post, so I’ve included them here. The time lapse video is on google drive because I can’t post videos here directly and don’t want to use YouTube.

Guess that had a better phone stand

Timelapse video is a good idea to show your process, will check it on desktop asap. Also, can’t you change it into a gif?

Round one? I’m not sure I follow. The last image is the underside of the front bumper, you can see the ‘crack’ on the right where it extends from the bulkhead (above my finger).

Actually I just stuck it in a cup.

That was my intention, it’s better when the process is longer though.

I tried, but the video either exceeds the file size limit or the duration limit on all the gif makers I tried, and they also compress it quite badly or skip frames.

Instead you could start a YouTube channel to upload these timelapses and your other videos. Just watched it and I think it’s a cool idea to use for more future projects!
