Closed or Weak vowels: I, U.
Opened or Strong vowels: A, E, O.
remember this!
-
Tonic Syllable:
Itâs the most strong syllable in a word. -
Unstressed Syllable:
Itâs the weak syllable in the work.
Example:
Perro (dog):
Pe-rro.
Tonic Syllable=Pe
Unstressed Syllable: rro.
Mochila (backpack)
Mo-chi-la
Tonic: chi.
Unstressed: mo, la.
To clarify:
Tonic: itâs just one syllable.
Unstressed: the rest of them.
All the words have tonic syllable, thatâs called âacentoâ in Spanish. Donât confuse with âtildeâ (it is the little line over the vowels)
Note: tilde is the punctuation mark. It is over the vowels. The accent is the strong syllable and it isnât necessary that have tilde.
Accentuation of the words:
In Spanish we count the syllables from right to left. We have 4 ways of know when the tilde goes: âagudasâ, âgravesâ, âesdrĂșjulasâ and âsobreesdrĂșjulas.â
Agudas (according to Google translate: sharp words):
They have the tilde on the last syllable. The verbs in past and in present (generally) are Sharp words. It only apply for those words that end in -n, -s and vowel.
Seré (I will be) is sharp because
PasĂł (passed) is sharp too.
Grave (I unknown the right translate)
It has the tilde on the penultimate syllable. It applies for those words that donât end in -n, -s or vowel.
Ălbum (ĂĄlbum)
Ăl-bum.
CĂĄrcel (jail)
CĂĄr-cel.
TĂo (uncle)
TĂ-o.
- The word âwouldâ is translated as â-rĂaâ, itâs a termination and itâs the best example of this type of words.
EsdrĂșjulas: (this one too)
It always have tilde on the antepenultimate syllable.
GrĂĄfico:
GrĂĄ-fi-co.
EsdrĂșjulas:
Es-drĂș-ju-las.
Ănico (only):
Ă-ni-co.
SobreesdrĂșjulas:
It has the tilde before the antepenultimate syllable. Almost always have the suffix â-lyâ (-mente) and an adjective:
PĂșblicamente (publicly)
PĂș-bli-ca-men-te
EstĂșpidamente (stupidly)
Es-tĂș-pi-da-men-te
EXERCISE

Becoming more difficult! need time to study itâŠ
Of c you can have time. Weâve got the best teachers.
Fast explanation:
- Diptongos:
Itâs the union of two vowels in the same syllable that canât be separated. Example:
Can-ciĂłn (song)
As you can see the union between the âiâ and the âoâ canât be separated.
- Triptongos:
Itâs the union of three vowels in the same syllable that canât be separated. Example:
Si-guien-te (next)
As you can see the union of the âuâ, âiâ and âeâ canât be separated.
Notes:
The âyâ is considered as a vowel for its pronunciation in some words. Example:
U-ru-guay
The syllable âguayâ has a âyâ, but this sounds like an âiâ, for that, in this case, the âyâ is considered as a vowels.
The most common triptongos has the combination of the âuâ and the âeâ or âiâ with other vowel. Example:
Quieres (you want)
Guiar (guide)
Buey (ox)
There are more combinations.
- Hiatus: (hiato)
Itâs when there are two vowels together, but you can separate them. Example:
Hiato: hi-a-to.
The accent is in the system âaâ for that reason you can separate them.
The words end in -rĂa are the best example.
Homework:
Write 10 examples in Spanish of each concept (30 totally) before the 16th of February.
