Thank you for posting this. Im thinking about going to the stores around here and putting out donation jars and collecting money for the families.
What is going on with this world? What makes a person walk into a school and start shooting?
[quote=Shoegaze4u]That’s very sad. I read, that all weapons had been bought on a legal way by his mother. Why the hell does she need to have weapons? I never understood, why it is allowed to have guns in the United States in the present time. I mean, I can’t see a reasonable purpose for that. Fucking gun lobby!
[quote=Sara Long]gun control wont work. the guy had no criminal record. they should put more security measures in place in schools. cops/security with metal detectors or body scan xrays etc. the entire world seems like its collapsing. i wish we as LPU’ers could do something to help the families touched by this tragedy. i know i would do anything i could.

You said, you need weapons to protect your family. That’s an argument. Let’s discuss.
I grew up a somewhat different system. Here in Germany you need a permit (strict) to own weapons a extra permit (very strict) to carry them. And it’s regulated, that weapons have to be stored in a safe and the munition has to be isolated. Perhaps this regulations are the reason, why such rampages are relatively rare in Germany. The last case I remember was in 2009. A son stole his father’s (legal) weapon and killded several students. The father didn’t stored the gun properly and therefore he was convicted of manslaughter by a court.
I am convinced that it has to be a task by the police and safety authorities, to protect us from criminals. It’s not a solution that many private persons getting armed. Where will this end?
I guess a important question is: Is there really a need to “protect” ourselves? Quite honestly: I’m sitting here on my couch (without a gun in my house) and I don’t feel threatened at all. Who persuade us, that the world is that dangerous? That questions reminds me to the documentary “Bowling For Columbine”. This film made me even more skeptical.

You are right. If that happens, I really can’t do very much. You indeed could defend yourself better, so long as you have the chance to grab your gun.
The point is, that I just don’t expect that it happens. Of course I’am not walking through live totally careless. I’am attentive. And I’am trying to prevent dangerous situations. But life is perilous and I can’t be prepared for every situation. I guess that more weapons don’t cause more safety.
I know, that Americans have another history and many people are open-minded to this theme. It’s interesting to hear your thoughts. Because in my country it isn’t a public theme to allow weapons or to discuss, why they are restricted. almost nobody complains, that he can’t buy a gun. Maybe it’s just a matter of habit.
I CANT UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE WOULD DO SUCH A THING …MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO THE COMMUNITY, SCHOOL, AND FAMILYS!!!
we aren’t going to know for a long time. all we can do right now is keep sandy hook in our prayers and find ways to support them.

so you will give children the constant feeling that they NEED protection from insane people? limit their freedom at school, make them feel like they could be the one with a gun by searching them every morning
of course gun control is the only way to stop this madness. and watching out for people next to you. what would you know what drove that guy to do such a mad thing? what would you know what could have prevented it?
maybe his mother, who was killed in the shooting said something about his live situation and he just snapped…
don’t get me wrong I don’t take the shooters side. I just know someone that killed himself and could easily killed a lot people in my school and we all saw the signs and nobody did anything.
for gun control - that does not mean to check if someone has a criminal record.
gun control means that every gun made is state-registered
every sold gun will be registered with name and adress of buyer
only a buyer of a gun is allowed to possess or use it, noone else
buying a gun is only legit with a weapon license
you only get a weapon license if your criminal record is clean and you areover 18. for some weapons even older
wearing a gun in public is forbidden by law
guns have to - by law - be locked away in a weaponry safe and can only brought out for hunting season and official shooting fairs.
you cannot prevent such horrible things by putting everybody under general suspicion. You have to work from the source: care about people and take away the access to guns.

This is a truly horrible incident.
As for the guns issue, I hold this belief: Guns don’t kill people. People kill people.
that is so true. first thing should ever be watching over your own mental health. seek help and let other help, and help if you see someone with issues…
putting guns away will contribute to not let a snapping mind do impossible things.
worst killing spree we had in germany in the last 10 years was a 19yo boy that got expelled from school bc he forged an MD’s signature after ditching school for a couple of days, left with no graduation and no perspective for a job whithin twenty minutes he killes 14 people and himself with a gun he illegally obtained.
bc he was full of age his parents were not informed about his expulsion. not really the headmasters brightest momemt taking in consideration she had not the legal right to expell someone anyway.

gun control is a factor. Most of the shootings in the USA have been done with legally obtained guns.
(ask yourself, what are the odds that that person that just killed 25 children would have been able to do so, if he hadn’t have the opportunity to just walk into a store and buy a gun? and on’t tell me ‘Oh so he would have taken a knife then’…it is way more easier to overpower someone wearing a knife than a gun. It is way harder to hurt so many people in the same amount of time with a knife as it is with a gun)
Of course first and foremost, the mental health care system must get way better. Noone is helped with condemming all guns and gun-like objects if the mentally ill still run around with no help.
All those shootings could not have been prevented by increasing security measures but by more consciousness to what children and teenagers and young adults and adulst are capable of suffering from a psychological illnes and not getting the help that they need. THAT is the source of where to start preventing those tragedies.
Social and medical awareness will prevent those.
Taking away freedom of people by increasing security measures is just stupid, that will not help, So they don’t kill 25 people in a school but in the mall then… So increase the security measures there too! Point cameras at everyone. So they just run around the street and kill there, increse the security measures there too? Welcome to 1984
It is not a solution to make people feel that there is a constant thread of such rempages and it is not a solution to put everyone under general suspicion (as I said before…of course you did not read that)
In my oppinion it is too late to prevent anything if THAT person leaves his/her own room in his/her own house.
TripleXero said something in chat, that made me think. To help people that are victims of a rempage it would be good to have safe rooms and locks. Maybe look down measures if a code black is declared would be helpfull too, but not what I have read here before…
and as far as allowing teachers to wear guns goes: excuse me, WHAT? That is like the stupidest thing I have ever heard. “Ok lets all wear guns so if someone with a gun comes along we can shoot 'em”…
same goes for “Taking away guns is like taking away cars from sober people”. What do you think guns are? A status symbol? Something to get you further in life? Do you have a gun? please tell me, so I wont get near you any time soon. Why the hell does half of US Americans need guns? What do you get by posessing them?
